Not a Finger!

Some of M.I.A.'s artwork.

As a hundred golden centurions carried Madonna onto the Superbowl 2012 field, I thought, “I really hope they break into a cover of African Child“. She ignored my telepathic wish and instead went for the safe pick, Vogue.

There really wasn’t anything unsafe about this performance except M.I.A.’s well placed middle finger and pronouncement that she doesn’t give a shit.

The masses have been given their red cape to charge at, so I guess we’ll see a round of talking heads whining like little bitches about the sanctity of football. First a black tit, now a brown finger. What are white children supposed to think?

I say fuck football. Fuck the Superbowl. It’s a bunch of juiced up Jesus freak millionaires giving each other concussions. If they had battle axes it might be interesting.

M.I.A.’s career has been all about relocating pop to the rest of the world and uplifting youth movements in far away lands (check out the Arab racing scene in her latest video). And you know what? The rest of the world plays a totally different kind of football.

So yeah, I don’t give a shit either.

Jason Dunbar, Millenium’s Sous Chef Dies at 34

Christel and I never met Jason Dunbar, but we’ve eaten his food many times. We always sit at the bar when we go into Millenium and from that vantage you get a good look at the kitchen and all the general ruckus therein. I have a clear memory of Jason’s dredlocks whipping about.

Before Gather opened, Millenium was basically the only spot we could both agree on for special occasions. Jason Dunbar’s cooking has probably been a part of anniversaries, birthdays, my graduation from UC Berkeley, celebrating Christel’s sister’s defeat of intestinal cancer and dozens of evenings where we felt like we needed to treat ourselves to something special.

Like I said, we didn’t know him, but he was present (or his recipes were) at some pretty significant times in our lives and are thankful to have at least known his food.

He was just 2 years older than I am and by all accounts died doing what he loved: spending time with friends in Yosemite.

I’ve been death obsessed for the last six months and I always keep coming back the same refrain. Time is short, you should do what you’ve always wanted to do because your card can get punched anytime, anywhere. If you were happy in your vocation and you died surrounded by friends in a beautiful place, well that’s not such a bad way to go.

If there’s a lesson here it’s this: time is short, fill it with what you love.

A memorial celebration is scheduled at 2 p.m. May 27 at the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive, in Lafayette.
